A life Worth of Living For

Throughout the book Jonas tells us about the fear his community has about RELEASE, but they really don't know what release means. The Giver, being one of the most honorable person in his community, has also asked himself what would become of him by the time he has to be released. This doesn't worry him, he already knows what will happen.  During one of Jonas' sessions with the Giver, Jonas told him about the release of the twins his father made that morning and that the one who weighed less is being released. The only way for Jonas to understand release was by watching it, so the Giver made him watch the releasing ceremony of the twin. After watching it Jonas was SHOKED, he did not only see his father killing the baby with a needle, he saw his father emotionless towards killing somebody and this made him cry so much that he couldn't go back home. To calm down Jonas, the Giver told him that they will make a plan and eventually it turned out to be a great plan. The only way for the community to have feelings and
memories from past generations, is by Jonas going away and leaving all behind and leaving his memories for the community just like Rosemary did. Rosemary was this beautiful girl that turned out to be the  Givers daughter. She wasn't just an ordinary girl, she was the girl who was selected to be the new receiver of memories long ago and failed her task. In his community an unscheduled holiday is very rare but Jonas was very happy to have one, he went to play with Asher and his friends and found them playing a war like game. This really made Jonas freak out because he started seeing the boys face in middle of a WAR and this was very hard for him to see because he was the only one who truly understood the concept of war, he was alone.

When Jonas found out what releasing meant his world was torn apart, everything changed for him, he is realizing that his community is not how it seemed one year ago. He is realizing that not everybody is either a good or bad person, they just can't feel anything. This made Jonas feel overwhelmed......

"Jonas felt a ripping sensation inside himself, the feeling of terrible pain clawing its way to emerge in a cry" (151).

This quote made me understand the importance of memories, if everybody in Jonas community had real feelings the whole community would be different, but they can't feel or love anybody, they are like ROBOTS, they don't feel anything. Jonas and the Giver are the only people in their community who had felt real pain, pleasure, sadness and love. This realization made me see how important memories are in Jonas community, having all of those memories not only gives him wisdom, they give him much more than that and that is the ability not only to see what happened long ago but to know things that people in his community will never understand. I think that's one of the main reasons of why he is so determined to leave the community. Jonas knows that his community will struggle having all of his memories but he knows that things can change because even "robots" can have feelings.

Jonas will never feel again what it is to be a boy because even though he is stil twelve, all of the painfull memories have taken something out of him, and part of it is his childhood. He now sees the world differently and knows that he can do something to make it right, to make it worthy of living. Although the Giver and Jonas plan is a very good one, I still think that maybe it will fail beacause in Rosemary's case, she died and this caused her memories to be transmitted to the community. Jonas is not going to kill himself, he is just going elsewhere.  If you want to find out? Soon you will know!
love can last a life time... isn't that worth living for?

  1. Gaby, I loved your post! It was so interesting! I totally agree with you about the importance of memories and how it gave wisdom to Jonas, thanks to the knowledge of the past. So memories give us wisdom, thanks to the experiences lived in the past, but we should also consider that memories are always able to change our mood. When I read the following quote ´´ He could feel the little head nudge his back, bouncing gently against him as he rode. Gabriel was sleeping soundly, strapped into the seat. Before he had left the dwelling, he had laid his hands firmly on Gabe s back and transmitted to him the most soothing memory he could: a slow swinging hammock under palm trees on an island someplace, at evening, with a rhythmic sound of languid water lapping hypnotically against a beach nearby. As the memory seeped from him into the new child, he could feel Gabe s sleep ease and deepen. There had been no stir at all when Jonas lifted him from the crib and placed him gently into the molded seat.´´ (Lowry 166) This quote made me think that a memory has such ´power´ that it is able to change the feelings of someone, it can make the rest of the day happier. I could not imagine a world without feelings! It will be terrible. The book gives us many clues that the feelings in this community aren’t real, as you said like robots, for example in page 127, Jonas asks his parents ´´Do you love me?´´ and his parents instead of saying yes as every father, they said ´´Jonas. You, of all people. Precision of language, please!´´ I just think that in the community they only appreciate each other because of their achievements not by who they are. Answering your question, I think love is worth living for because it makes you feel ´a life´ even if it has its ups and downs, they teach us many things.

    1. Isa, I am very glad you liked my post and yes its true that memory gives us power because even in our bad days those are the ones who gives us strength and keep going on because we know we are able to do it because someone else has and you have that memory I agree with you that in their community they only appreciate each other because of their achievements and we also do that to but the difference is that we also give love to others. I am very happy to hear that we both think the same about how love is worth of living

  2. Gaby, the quote and analysis you made really made me go into deeper thinking and I realised not only this community needs feelings but wisdom. Killing people isn't making a community happy, just stable. This society searches stability instead of happiness and peace.

    1. Amalia, I think the same as you about that the society wants stability instead of happiness and peace because if they weren't seeking for that they wouldn't have gone to sameness to start with

  3. Gaby, I agree when you mentioned that memories are important in Jonas community, adding on, I think that memories are not only important for Jonas community but for the entire world and for every individual learning new things every day. As you mentioned, memories give wisdom, they also give you EXPERIENCE that helps you make right decisions and a good way to gain more knowledge.

    1. Andrea, I am glad that we both have the same opinion about the importance of memories and I strongly agree with you that they give experience because if we didn't had them we wouldn't know what to do when difficult situations arrive.
